Fran Fearnley introduced Canadians to Zimbabwean stone sculpture in 2000, when she opened ZimArt's Rice Lake outdoor sculpture gallery in rural Ontario. For 24 years, until her retirement, Fran successfully operated a spectacular gallery that broadened the appreciation and appetites of thousands of Canadian art enthusiasts.
Her sincere respect and care for the amazing Zimbabwean sculptors that she represented, and her passion for their extraordinary art, was, and still is, abundantly clear. Wayne Gallimore, an art collector and former art dealer, fell in love with Zimbabwean stone sculptures at Fran's gallery, then jumped on the opportunity to continue her mission by launching ZimSculpture Gallery - with Fran's generous collaboration. So, this exquisite African art form continues to be available for those who are passionate about and connect with captivating art.
Wayne visited Zimbabwe with Fran to meet sculptors (see photo above) and ‘learn the ropes’. As a result, ZimSculpture Gallery is now stocked and offering the artwork of both established stone sculptors, as well as new, emerging-young artists.
Wayne subsequently visited the British Museum in London (see photo below), to view their impressive collection of Zimbabwean stone sculptures and learn more about the importance of this work. He unfortunately did not get to visit King Charles, who once opened a major Zimbabwean sculpture exhibition at London's Barbican centre and is a collector of this art form. Maybe next time Wayne.
The operators of ZimSculpture Gallery have deeply involved themselves in the Zimbabwean sculpture art movement and are focusing all their energy and enthusiasm in this venture. They are committed to, and excited about, promoting exceptional Zimbabwean artists and their extraordinary artwork in Canada, and wherever else they can.
ZimSculpture Gallery is also working collaboratively with Miriam Davidson of Rice Lake Arts (located at the former ZimArt venue). Rice Lake Arts will continue to offer exciting, hands-on art workshops and other cultural events in a beautiful natural setting. For more information please visit www.ricelakearts.ca.
