ZimSculpture Gallery started from a passion for Zimbabwean stone sculptures, also known as Shona Sculptures. It was further fuelled by our desire to share "the most important new art form to emerge from Africa this century" (Newsweek Magazine) with as many art enthusiasts as we can.
The elegant and powerful sculptures are renowned for their individuality, colours and brilliance of form. They have also been described as "deeply human, spirited in every sense and supurbly skilled" (Sunday Telegraph, London). And there are facinating stories associated with each piece.
Our curator, Wayne Gallimore, has an extensive background as an art collector, gallery operator, and former Board Member of both the National Art Gallery of Jamaica and Jamaica's Museum of History and Ethnography - where he chaired their acquisitions committee. So it is with a trained eye that he selects each piece, directly from the artists we represent, when he travels to Zimbabwe. ZimSculpture Gallery has the great honour of representing the Tengenenge Art Centre - a branch of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe - and the Chitungwiza Art Centre, Zimbabwe's two foremost artist communities. And a select group of extremely talented (established and emerging) Shona stone sculptors.
We are based in Ontario, close to Toronto, and seek to further diversify Canada's artistic landscape with Zimbabwe's unique, exquisite and culturally significant stone sculptures. In doing so we help to address the historical underrepresentation of African art in Western markets.
ZimSculpture Gallery sustains partnerships with artists by striving to treat each one respectfully and with integrity. We aim to serve all customers likewise, and build long term, mutually beneficial relationships, whether a new or seasoned art collector, decorator, interior designer or investor. So we provide post sale customer care and advice regarding polishing, repairing, transporting and/or installing sculptures.
Every piece offered from our collection is a hand carved original and comes with a certificate of authentification. Zimbabwean stone sculptures enhance art collections, are beautiful both indoors and outdoors, and are suitable for residential, commercial and public spaces.
Please note that the photographs on our website reflect the actual pieces as much as possible, but they rarely capture and convey all their colours, textures, lines and other details. Like all artwork, our magnificent sculptures are most impactful when seen in person.
