Benjamin Musendami was born on the 24th of November 1980 in Murewa and grew up on a farm in Mvurwi, where his father worked. He was the firstborn in a family of five children and was educated at Rwere Primary School from 1988 to 1994. Benjamin moved to Holy Rosary secondary school in Mvurwi from 1995 to 1998 but unfortunately did not have the opportunity to further his studies.
In 1999 Benjamin was temporarily employed at his father's farm, where he worked shortly and nearly lost his life in a tractor accident. After recovering, he was influenced by his late brother Ezekiel Musendami, who was an established stone carver. And he worked as his assistant for two years at Artist for Artist in Mutorashanga.
Benjamin later assisted Tutani Mugvazi, the founder of Artist for Artist, for one year. Then he moved to Gavazi Art centre where he worked with Gerald Mugvazi. By that time Benjamin was a competent artist and could make a living selling his sculptures. So in 2003, he decided to work independently.
Benjamin moved to Mvurwi with his family in 2004 and joined Gwasha Sculpture Gardens where he worked until 2009. He formed the Marovadombo group of young artists. Then later formed the Mvurwi Art Centre, which accommodates over 25 artists and is still growing.
In 2013 Benjamin got an invitation to visit Germany, where he promoted his art and taught sculpting. He has subsequently spent three months there every year. His sculptures are exhibited around the world, but mostly in Germany, Canada, Holland, America, and Korea. According to Benjamin, “my art serves to create a relationship between all the different nationalities in the world.” And his motto is "Never say I am the best, always try to be among the best."
