Taylor Nkomo was born in 1953 in Bulawayo. Following his secondary school he trained at the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre and then later at the Bulawayo School of Art. Taylor is a multi-disciplinary artist. In the early stages of his artistic career he was active as a painter, textile designer and graphic artist. In 1977 Taylor was introduced to stone sculpting and has never looked back, although he still enjoys design and feels that his sculptures have been influenced by his work in other media.
In 1994 Taylor was invited to be in the in-house graphic artist for the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. A position he held for four years, before returning to sculpting full time. From 1997 – 2003 he was the liaison officer at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare, teaching fledgling artists the technical skills to work on stone.
Taylor has participated in a number of exhibitions curated by the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe and has received several awards of merit and certificates of excellence, in a variety of media. He has also participated in several group exhibitions in the United States and Switzerland.
Taylor was invited by Chapungu to give workshops overseas with the Gallery from 2000 to 2006 including Expo 2000 in Germany, Denver Botanical Gardens in 2004 & 2005, and Art in Action in Oxford, England in 2006.
Taylor’s technical precision, sophisticated concepts and desire to experiment have meant he has continued to grow as an artist. He joins different types of rock and uses stone inlay for design dramatic effect, bringing an almost painterly feeling to his sculptures. And Taylor’s work with textiles has led him to use interesting textural finishes on stone.
Taylor is currently one of the senior artists at the Chapungu Sculpture Gallery in Harare. The Gallery itself has not been functioning for a number of years but there is still a sculpting studio on site and a co-operative of about 20 sculptors.
Taylor’s works have been bought by collectors and galleries in the United States, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa and Canada.
Taylor has been represented in Canada since 2014.
