Brighton Layson was born on October 2nd 1981 in Harare. He is the fifth born in a family of seven, did his primary education at Tafara 1 primary school and secondary education at Oriel Boys High school.

İn 1999 Brighton started to assist his older brother Aaron who was a member of the Gwindingwi Sculptors, a group formed by the late great master carver Nicholas Mukomberanwa.

After two years assisting his brother, Brighton decided to leave sculpting and he trained, then worked as a fitter machinist. As he gained experience in his new profession he started making sculpting tools and became a supplier of tools to sculptors across Zimbabwe.

İn 2010, the company he worked for closed and Brighton decided to return to the field of art. He says he spent several years working alone perfecting his technique and experimenting with different styles. With other sculptors, he eventually formed the Tafara Mabvuku Art Association (TAMAA).

İn 2013 he was invited to join the prestigious Dominic Benhura Studios where he is now working with the likes of Dominic Benhura, Eddie Masaya, Fabian Madamombe, and Stanford Derere.

Brighton says he has gained confidence though the mentorship of other artists and he credits Dominic Benhura in particular for opening his eyes to “understand the world of art,” and for encouraging him to explore different ways of expressing himself.

Brighton believes stone sculpture reflects what an artist feels, thinks and sees. He is inspired by nature. The mountains, rivers and valleys, he explains, have helped him to appreciate the beauty of natural shapes and that has influenced his work. He enjoys playing with concepts of light and dark and shadow.

Brighton sells work at The National Gallery of Zimbabwe. His expressive works have also found their way to galleries in the US, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, South Korea and South Africa.

Brighton has been represented in Canada since 2016.
