Try Gora was born in Guruve in 1981, a region with a strong sculpting tradition. His first introduction to stone carving came after he finished high school when he started to apprentice with the late Gerald Mugavazi at the Gavazi Art Centre. At that time his work was figurative and he carved in softer stones.
Try credits Benjamin Musendami with being his most important mentor because he encouraged him to develop his own style and to explore his concepts in abstract forms.
In 2003 Try moved to Mvurwi to assist Tutani Mugavazi , while he continued to work on his own art. Six years later he reconnected with Benjamin, who had started a small sculpting co-operative. Try joined the group at the Mvurwi Arts Centre and has remained with them since then.
A gentle spiritual man, Try is drawn to exploring human emotions in his work, which is now largely abstract. He continues to be influenced by his rural roots and his religious beliefs.
His work has sold to galleries and collectors in Germany, Holland, the UK, and Canada.
Try has been represented in Canada since 2016.
